Teens Text, Hate E-Mail

A recent study by ComScore Media Metrix shows teen usage of e-mail DECLINED by 8% last year. Today’s instant generation has turned to text messaging instead.

This trend is news to the ears of mobile carriers who raked in $70 billion in text message revenues worldwide last year, according to Gartner. This trend could mean big trouble for web portals such as Yahoo that depend on e-mail for much of their traffic.

While numbers are already booming worldwide, the USA has been slower to embrace texting technology. In first quarter, 2006, Verizon’s 54.8 million customers averaged about two text messages per day.

Teen-centric carrier Virgin certainly understands the potential of the teen texting market. It recently introduced its penny text program that gives teens a thousand messages per month for $9.99.

According to a Pew study, two-thirds of teens use text messaging. The other third probably have parents who refuse to buy them a text plan.
