Sprint Raises Text Message Fee, But Does it Matter?

Sprint has announced that it is raising it’s cost per text message from .15 to .20 per text, effective October 1.
This will probably be big news and will be picked up by many media. But, does it really matter? Text messaging is cheap if you get a bucket plan, often less than .01 per text; for heavy text message users, there are unlimited text plans. I’m sure Sprint is increasing the price to drive more users into using large volume text plans which are clearly the future of the industry.
Unfortunately, however, many uninformed non-texters see stories like this and are more scared away from texting. Why would they pay .20 for a single 160-character message when they can get a phone call for essentially free?
It reminds me of the old 900 number days. Adult programs have not been permitted on 900 numbers since 1991, but still many people correlate the 900 number industry with heavy breathing. Will Sprint’s increase cause non-texters to say text messaging is expensive?
