New York Yankees introduce Text Alerts

The official TV channel of the New York Yankees, The YES Network, has introduced  free SMS alerts to fans who sign up.  First, fans must decide which type of alert they want to receive on the YES Network web site.  Alerts include news and score updates for the Yankees, and the New Jersey Nets.  To sign up fans enter their cell phone number on the website and receive a five-digit code via text message to be entered on the Yes Network web site.  Fans can also sign up by texting a keyword to a shortcode (GOYANKS to 44636).  Subscribers can expect to receive anywhere from 1 to 5 text alerts per day.  However there is a catch… In order to keep the service free, there will be ads sent out with every text.  Currently sponsors include Papa JOhn’s, HBO, Starz and Spike TV.   Text message alerts have become one of the hottest new advertising mediums today and the YES Network seems to be taking advantage of this.
