Last week, both the House and the Senate voted to unanimously approve legislation that will allow taxpayers to claim a deduction on their 2009 income tax returns for contributions to earthquake relief victims in Haiti,

even though those donations occurred in 2010.

Tax payers have until February 28, 2010 to qualify for the tax relief for donations to Haiti.  Only cash donations are eligible; non-cash contributions such as canned food or clothing are not deductible until the filing of your 2010 tax returns.

Because of the large amount of donations made to Haiti via text message, a special provision was also added to address it.  The provision allows for a telephone bill to be used as qualifying documentation of contributions made by text message.

It’s not often that Republicans and Democrats agree unanimously to approve anything, but House bill 4462 is one of those rare instances.

The American Red Cross has raised over $30 million to date from text message donations from the generous American public.
